Almost all of our learning is learning from the past, reflecting on the past. The concepts, theories, case studies, etc., Learning from the past is not enough. The future is not going to look like the past.
There is another place to learn from, which most of us are not trained in, at least not trained in rigorously i.e. Learning from the future.
We have to give up the mental block that ‘future is not here’ so we can’t learn from it. Consider the future is here. It’s not spread evenly, so we can’t see it easily. But since we can’t see it easily doesn’t mean it is not here.
Only if you can see this future, which we call as the emerging future, can you create the opportunities in sync with that emerging future, otherwise you get disrupted when the future hits you and you are caught unaware, unprepared.
Most individuals and many companies including the companies who were successful at one time but are not so now – one way to say is – that they were focused on the future that they want to create, but were not able to sense the future that was emerging.
